These brightly colored woven bags can be seen throughout the high Andes of Bolivia and Peru. The natives hang them from their shoulders and use them to carry sacred coca leaves, herbs and seeds.
Crafted by the Quechua people in the rugged Bolivian countryside outside of Potosi, the “Chuspas” are woven into designs of festive color and geometric patterns meant to bring good fortune. When not carrying the days supply of coca leaf and llipta , or mineral lime powder, the chuspas are used to hold seeds such as quinoa, and bestow a blessing on the future crop prior to sowing. Colors and designs may vary.
