An unusual variety of Anadenanthera colubrina found growing in small riverine oases among the Andes in areas extending between southern Bolivia and northern Argentina.
Archeological investigations done by Dr. Manuel Torres, an expert on the archaeology and ethnobotany of ritual snuff use in South America and the Carribean revealed stunning evidence of ancient use of Cebil-containing snuffs. Archaeological excavations unearthed mummies that were buried with woven textile bags containing ritual snuff tools and remains of what appear to be toasted and ground cebil seeds. Sacred use of cebil continues to this day among the shamans of the Wichi tribe of northern Argentina.
A gorgeous and graceful leguminous tree whose intricate, compound bipinnate leaves are comprised of hundreds of tiny pinna. Mature specimens can reach 8 to 10 meters with flowers forming small spherical spikey masses and seeds arranged in long, flat arched pods. Makes a good candidate for container growing and can be kept compact by pruning. Must be protected from heavy frost and freezing weather.
