An extremely rare offering originating in Southeast Asia especially Thailand and Malaysia. Traditional use of Mitragyna speciosa, the kratom plant, seems confined to rural Thailand where it's considered a highly illegal substitute for opium. In many ways its use parallels that of native coca chewers in South America. Most of the folks who make use of kratom leaves via chewing, smoking or a tea, do so as a way of assuaging the discomforts of a physically arduous daily existence.
Natives say that chewing the leaves will make you feel good and able to work hard. Kratom seems to ease the mind, energize the body and allows a sort of meditative repose under the most grueling physical conditions.
Habitual opium users employ it as an economical alternative to opium. Tentative research suggests that kratom's activity may be largely due to the indole alkaloid mitragynine. This compound apparently shows an affinity for the brain's opiate receptors and may show promise as a treatment for interupting opiate dependency. In low doses mitragynine produces stimulating effects while higher levels yield narcotic and sedative effects.
We are pleased to offer live specimens for the first time here in the states. Plants are of a proven red-veined variety originally discovered by Robert Rifat. This one loves lots of heat and humidity. Normally grows as a tropical evergreen tree, but does well pruned back as a container shrub.
Due to the tenderness of this plant, we can only guarantee 2 Day shipments. If you live in an area that is 3 days or more from our location (check UPS map in our shipping section), we will only guarantee safe arrival if you choose 2nd Day Air.
